Boheun Building

Bukchon Village is the only area in Seoul dotted with traditional hanok (Korean house). It is located at the foot of Bukaksan Mountain, adjacent to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Geukwon (Biwon). For Boheun Building, which was built here, we focused on naturally blending in with the existing order without harming the surrounding scenery. We also tried to resolve the conflict between the disparate elements of traditional hanok and concrete buildings in a wholesome manner through traditional building materials and the composition of internal space on a human scale. The exterior wall facing the road is designed as a moderate, yet free, façade to lessen the heavy presence of the mass filling the ground. The outer wall inside open toward the inner court is treated as a curtain wall to allow users to enjoy the inner court, like a well-organized courtyard. The sunlight and the sound of rain pouring into the inner court on the first basement floor blurs the idea that it is an underground space. It offers a pleasant moment as if looking at a courtyard at home.
